If your company has a spam problem, and it needs a spam blocker, we recommend using a premium anti spam service in order to guarantee maximum quality and price due to economies of scale. Click here for more information on why.
We recommend using one of the following spam blocker services:
SpamStopsHere is our editor's choice for a spam blocker product.
Using an inaccurate spam blocker product can actually result in costing a company more money than not using any spam blocker product. SpamStopsHere was rated #1 for accuracy in a Network Computing magazine review where over 30 spam blocker products were rated.
SpamStopsHere uses a proprietary URL filter that blocks the majority of the spam that passes through their filters, with excellent accuracy. In fact, shortly after they were rated #1 for accuracy in Network Computing, several of their competitors implemented URL filtering. However, SpamStopsHere's database of spammer URLs is years ahead of their competitors. Additionally, SpamStopsHere owns several patents related to URL filtering that will keep them years ahead of their competitors for a very long time.
URL filtering works by filtering email based on the links in email messages that lead to spammer owned web sites. These in theory cost the spammers money to run, so they don't change as often as the other keywords in email. Additionally, their should be no reason the link to a spammer owned web site would appear in a legitimate email message, where other keywords would.
SpamStopsHere also shows you actual pricing information on their web site. They're the only spam blocker service that currently does this. All of the other products require you to talk to a sales person and negotiate a price and sign a contract
In summary, if you need a spam blocker, there is no better product than SpamStopsHere.
Postini is a very inexpensive spam blocker. Their web control panel is also constantly updated and has very useful data that can be managed right from your "iGoogle" home page. However, we have found that they block approximately 45% of legitimate e-mail also.
When Postini was reviewed for accuracy by Network Computing magazine, the service didn't even rank in the top 10. However, if you are a frequent google user and only need a spam blocker for personal email where missing a legitimate email because they think its spam isn't important, its definitely good for home use. In fact, if you have your personal domain name hosted on Google Apps, I would recommend their Postini email security product over the free spam blocker that Hotmail and AOL use on their email.
However, if you have your company domain name hosted on Google Apps, there's no need to feel obligated to use Google for your spam blocker also. You can use our editor's choice, or any other product reviewed here. We do recommend going with a service though.
We really don't know very much about MessageLabs. They haven't been reviewed by Network Computing magazine. Although they had agreed to participate in the review, they dropped out. They were likely concerned about how their product would compare to their competitors.
I've heard rumors that MXLogic is priced about the same as SpamStopsHere, although they require a contract and they don't even offer a free 30 day trial like their competitors. Instead, they simply offer a 30 day satisfaction guarantee.
In the Network Computing review, MXLogic was found to have even worse accuracy than Postini. Their control panel Interface is very pretty, but there are too many options that are named too similar, and it's hard to tell what they're supposed to do.
